O3O.Foundation been running a Mastodon social media site promoting freedom of speech and digital rights for Chinese users. We have been accepting donations through Stripe, however, we have recently encountered a series of suspicious credit card fraud disputes raised against us. As a result, Stripe has charged us large amounts of fees, which are significantly higher than the donations we have received. To prevent further fraud, we have decided to pause accepting donations and refund all suspicious donations we received in April.
We are not sure if this is a targeted attack against us by a malicious party. However, we want to urge other site administrators who also accept donations from users to be cautious and vigilant about this issue. The pattern of fraudulent activity we have observed involves donors using temporary and alias email addresses, making small donation amounts, and then submitting credit card fraud disputes with Visa/Mastercard. This has resulted in Stripe charging a dispute fee that is much higher than the original donation amount.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and assure you that we are taking all the necessary steps to investigate the matter and prevent it from happening in the future. We value your support and trust in our mission, and we will continue to work towards promoting freedom of speech and human rights in China.
